However if you listen to Todd Kelman from a recent fan forum, Sheffield doesn't have anywhere near to stay or anywhere to eat. :hey:
If I am honest, this is a valid point.

With Nottingham, you are a short walk into the centre with loads of restaurants, pubs, shops, spoons etc.

Sheffield has a couple of small pubs around the arena, a few eateries in Centertainment and other than that, it's a tram/taxi into town.

Unless Sheffield were going to look at 3/4 pop up beer tents in a fan zone style, I'm not sure it would work.

Well I suppose it comes down to how hard you try and who you are trying to attract. True, if all your after is a pee up in the city centre, then Sheffield is not the ideal place.
But if the league is prepared to look at it in a slightly different way, and attract more of a family centric fan base with still the options of having a drink, but with so much more value included in the event, then I believe Sheffield could hold a suberb Playoffs...

I think their behaviour has shown they definitely aren't prepared to do that, and if their PR is to be believed, all 10 clubs "agreed" to the prices. So we'd be getting ripped-off no matter the hosting venue.

The EIHL seem to have a very weird sense of customer loyalty and satisfaction, the used to spout the line, of giving back to the fans and end of year party where we can all meet up Blah Blah Blah

They are simply not in touch with reality and see the playoffs as a cash cow to bolster their end of year cofers. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that and profit is certainly not a dirty word.

But the sheer arrogance and blinkered approach to to the event and the fans stink! they cant have the same marketing team as some of the clubs (especially SHEFFIELD) as those clubs are bending over backwards to keep fan loyalty and give the fans a game night experience and extra club activities and practise sessions and loyalty/Sponsor nights that want the fans coming back year on year..

I dont think Tony would host the playoffs unless he had carte blanche to do it his way! But if he ever does it will show up the league for the utter tut the keep producing every year..

I think Sheffield would be fine as a playoff venue and would like to see it happen for a couple of years just to shake things up.

The arena might not have the advantages of being in the city centre, but it's not exactly far away.

Before and after games we have a beer in the city centre and usually leave the pub around 6:40 to arrive in time for a 7:00 face off.

I'm sure if the playoffs were put on in Sheffield arrangements could be made with Supertram to put on more trams at peak times.

This year our intention is to stay in Beeston for the playoffs, which I'm guessing is probably a similar distance from Nottingham centre as Sheffield Arena is from Sheffield centre....I don't see there being any issues, only that we'll have to check into our hotel in the evening rather than the afternoon.

Regards

Normally POFW has been a large fixture to calendar in every year for me. A chance to watch hockey and also meet friends from around the league that I have made over the years.

However, each year now sees the cost of going increase steadily. This year is no exception.

Suppose hypothetically I decided to go now. From where I live now, I estimate POFW would cost me probably north of £500 for flights, transport, hotel and monies for eating and drinking. I cannot afford that quite simply. Therefore I'll be watching it unfold at home in County Down.

To charge £125 with no concessions is quite frankly extortionate particularly when I paid £12.50 (inclusive of booking fees) to watch the Challenge Cup Final this week and that like POFW, is a league event rather than a club one.

Lets just say for arguments sake that 4,000 people turn up in Nottingham and call it £120 per ticket.

So 4,000 x £120 = £480,000

If the Sheffield Arena hosted it at say £60 a ticket and 9,000 turned up 9,000 x £60 = £540,00

Everyone's a winner, cheaper tickets, more people, bigger venue, better atmosphere.

No idea if Sheffield is more expensive to rent that Nottingham is, but I doubt there's that much in it.

there is a good argument for hosting elsewhere as Nottingham seems to have become too comfortable a venue so the experience has suffered
Sheffield would be OK as centertainmemt could cater for a lot of needs and centre isn't far away

Well what a surprise Playoff Day tickets go on sale today at 9am. From the Motorpoint arena.... That’s because they’ve sold less than half the arena.
