Sheffield Steelers retweeted.. Our hosts the Aalborg Pirates have just confirmed that the Free stream on their website that has been posted in various channels throughout Social Media will NOT be available in the UK.
Not available because the Steelers have bought the rights I'm hearing ?, if this is true then what a fantastic way to treat your fans. Whoever made that decision really needs to give their head a wobble.
Does no one at the Steelers ever consider the implications of decisions like these?
So presumably the other teams supporters will be able to see their club in this competition for free with their clubs approval, just us that are being asked to pay.
A little bit of good will goes a long way but bad will spreads ten fold. I hope they reap what they sow.

You would assume that as this idea was to raise revenue that the implications were discussed but it is clear that even if the possible negative reaction to such a decision was considered the expected consequences were deemed to be less important than the cash benefits gained. Now that is pure capitalism at work , money is king and if you don't like it then tough. But this is not just a business, it's a sports club with loyal fans and this decision is just a kick in the face as allowing them to watch what was an already free would have cost the club nothing, instead they have paid for the UK rights to force their supporters to pay. Sure some of the reaction is just people taking the opportunity to have a dig at the Steelers ( although the reasons for that are worth discussion elsewhere ) but the decision shows a complete lack of awareness of how it would be received. While the club has made massive steps forward under the stewardship of Tony Smith this decision confirms that we have not yet made similar improvements in understanding the fanbase. While we may be at the top of the league as measured by points gained on ice we are at the bottom if measured by moral leadership.

STEELERS STATEMENT:

All Sheffield Steelers fans will have the opportunity to watch the Steelers three Continental Cup games FREE if required this weekend.

The club has agreed two options for fans and they are as follows.

Option 1 – The stream for the 3 games will be provided FREE of charge with commentary from Jonathan Fearnley and Ron Shudra.

Option 2 – The stream will cost £30 for the 3 games with commentary from Jonathan Fearnley and Ron Shudra.

All profits from the stream after paying commentators and Visionmix will go to the Sheffield Childrens hospital Christmas appeal.

Club owner Tony Smith commented “I want to make it clear when the deal was done to take the stream and the price agreed with Aalborg Pirates this was a straight forward business agreement allowing our fans the opportunity to watch the Steelers play in Europe.

“It was only later yesterday we were made aware there would be a free stream, at no point in the clubs negotiations with Aalborg was a free to air stream mentioned.

“Any fans who have already bought the stream have the option of a full refund should they wish to take advantage of the free offer. An e-mail will be sent to those who have already bought the web cast advising how they can activate the refund if required.

“On behalf of the Steelers I would like to personally apologise to our fans for what has been a difficult 24 hours but I must stress this was a situation not of our making but one I hope now is brought to a satisfactory conclusion for all involved.”

I have to say I do genuinely believe Tony here.

Fully agree with what Mark wrote, put it much better than I ever could.

Well done to Tony Smith for sorting this mess out, takes a good person to admit there have been mistakes.

Hope Mark will now apologise for his vitriolic attack on Steelers management now the full facts are known or is morality just a one way system for administrators

The post was nowhere near vitriolic, nor was it personal. It was based on the knowledge available at the time, those facts have changed and as I have said publicly elsewhere I welcome the decision made even if I am not fully convinced of the explanation offered. The sentence about moral leadership still stands though, those facts have not changed.

However, choosing to attack board administrators is not the brightest decision you have made today.

I'm assuming Tony has banged a few heads together, however my feeling is we will watch for free and make a £30.00 charity donation, thus maximising the benefit.

I completely agree with Mark's post which is by no means an attack on any Steelers Management and I also think Tony has done well to sort out the issue.

We can now watch the games without feeling like Dick Turpin has turned up :D

It was a fully thought out post and at no point was it ever a vitriolic attack! he stated the reaction to this decision from the fans [Fact] he stated the decision was to raise revenue [Fact] He stated his belief that the club had made massive steps forward under the stewardship of Tony Smith [Fact] and he offered his opinion on how the club seems to treat its fans on occasion and he is hardly alone in that opinion is he..? and Tony himself in the statement offered his own personal apology to the fans for the misunderstanding and the difficult position it put fans in..

Maybe you should apologise for the wrong choice of words and jumping to your own misinformed opinions..
