Something I'd started looking at during the weekend was how Mitchell Balmas had performed in various positions on the team. This was really on the assumption that Perrault would sign, because I thought that could mean Balmas moving from RW.

This is taken from his game logs and makes interesting reading..

GP 37 Goals 23 Assists 26 Overall +/- is +14

Centre
GP 13 Goals 10 Assists 4 Overalll +/- is +4

LW
GP 4 Goals 1 Assists 1 Overall +/- is -6

This ties in with his season totals, so it looks like I've added it up correctly.

Based on this he's fine at both Centre and RW, but keep him away from the LW.

Also interesting that his assists are quite low at centre, but he scored even better there than on the RW.

My mate has also been looking at a few Balmas stats.

In games where he took 10 or more faceoffs, he was near 50%.

Teams he struggled against at faceoffs were Cardiff and Guildford, but he was just over 50% against Belfast.

The idea of him as a centre is growing on me. He seems to have a shoot first pass second mentality at centre and he's not bad at faceoffs (with more experience I'd expect him to improve).

Is it an upgrade?

Based on our expectations of last seasons team before the puck had dropped, I wouldn't say it is.

Based on what we actually saw from some of the players, it probably is (Seitz, Gentile and Pu under performed expectations and both Huttula and Tansey dropped down from previous high standards).

I think the Brit group certainly looks better than last season.

I suspect our season will depend on whether players meet or even exceed our expectations based on their CVs or if there are more Seitz and Gentile's.

If it's the latter, then Fox has to be under even more pressure.....let's hope not!
