Its sad when a long serving player, especially a favourite son, a Brit too, is moved on.
I think Ben has brought far more positives than negatives over the years. His skating pace, and goals, were down last year. He definitely wasn't worth more money and was likely to be at the very top end of wages already.
A change of direction seemed right at this time for the Steelers.
O’Connor leaves the Steelers

Sad to see him go. He has always been an exciting player who makes things happen so sometimes makes mistake. With uncertainty around whether there will be an EHIL season this year, I can see why he would want to make a decision to make sure he can earn for his family.

No player is going to admit to being driven by money.Johnny777 wrote:Ben has said on his twitter account that he had agreed terms but “the club wanted to go in a new direction” so their angle of the reason why is untrue
He has history remember, left PT high & dry in Coventry after leaving midway through his contract after demanding better terms.
He's got a family to look after so his reasons are well founded, but no sportsman will openly admit that.

Interesting move. Will we see another "high end" Brit replacement I wonder. If losing O'Connor means we could afford to bring in the likes of Farmer, Ferrara or Bowns (as unlikely as that would be) then I'd be very happy.

Thanks for the memories Benny.
I'd agree that his best hockey is probably behind him but if he was a player playing elsewhere and we had the option to bring him in then I reckon most fans would want him.
Sam Jones as replacement?
