I agree that some more thought should be given to the season overall. I know what you are saying Ginger about ditching the league trophy as the main goal , but realistically , how do you do this in a football barmy society? There has to be a league and people are going to want to win it. You can't just say , ok this is not important, it’s the playoffs .
I know this is the case in the NHL but they can't have one league , there are too many teams.
I second all your thoughts about keeping the lower teams competitive , we all need them , just like we need referees ! Unlike some near me I never boo the opposition onto the ice . Without these teams we have no sport to watch.
I personally think it's time to cut down the number of challenge cup games and resultant dead rubbers. But those games do benefit clubs financially and less games means less finance all round.
Maybe make it like the F.A cup ., but 2 legged. All the teams in the hat and a straight draw ( no M and S bags ). Then the lower rated teams might get great draws and have a real chance of making the semis or final.
There would have to be byes in the first round but the lower rated teams could get them , with a bit of luck. Haven't thought how that works numbers wise but no doubt someone will tell me.
Just my opinion , others are available !

Personally speaking, I'm always for the league over the playoffs, but supporters of other sports have adapted.
Rugby League now have the Grand Final. My boss is a big Leeds Rhinos fan, so I'll ask him whether the Grand Final is now the Holy Grail for supporters.
I'd certainly want to keep the playoffs as an end of season event. I think it's a great way of closing out the season with an overdose of hockey and it's a huge money spinner for the league, which probably helps to keep it going.

As A Huddersfield Giants fan I can safely say winning the Playoffs is the pinnacle of the sport, winning the League is all well & good but teams want the playoffs.Doom wrote: ↑Wed Jan 08, 2025 6:15 amPersonally speaking, I'm always for the league over the playoffs, but supporters of other sports have adapted.

I'm just glad to finish above the relegation zone
I thought the Grand Final was now the big one in Rugby League.
The problem I'd have with the playoffs being the main event in ice hockey is that it wouldn't always be the best team winning the main prize.
In the league injuries can obviously scupper a teams season, but if they're relatively short term injuries teams can recover and regain form. Even if they're longer term teams will still have time to bring in a replacement and continue their title challenge.
In a short playoff series teams won't have that luxury. A short term injury to someone like Greenfield could scupper a teams chances.
I want to see the best team win the main prize, not a team who may have just got lucky at the right time.

I suppose for me the best of both worlds would be shorter league programme and longer play off format, but everything is just to awkward to put into practice, things would would be alot easier if all teams owned their own rinks and do not rely on ice being available as at moment. so its just a case of making the best we can. We are a minority sport here and have to make do,,,,,

I seem to recall we used to use the league final positions to form 2 play off groups.
If money i.e. home games is the deciding factor in how the season is structured then surely sorting the cup games - September/mid October with final before Christmas,, league - mid October to mid March then play offs mid March/April based on league placing would be feasible.
It would keep all teams involved from first weekend to weekend before playoff finals.
