My main feeling about this game is relief that I didn't buy the webcast like I usually would.
I finally gave in & bought the webcast Will not be making that mistake again.
Part way though the first period I started playing word searches on my phone, it was more entertaining.
Woeful performance, said earlier that to me this was a game that would be a turning point of our season , win then back on track ,, lose then the end of any league title chance... I really thought it was to be the foremost but wrong i was. Really hard to understand how the majority of the team from last season [who could do no wrong ] can so under perform in the league this season. No one player to me has stood out so far this season other than golod. We dont get to see the full picture as to what is happening behind the scenes but something has changed within this group. But at the end of day thats hockey, all part of the good and bad times we endure over the seasons. HAPPY CHRISTMAS / NEW YEAR TO ALL ON FORUM
We came out flat, again, with no intensity, and were behind from the puck drop.
We came good in the 3rd as the Devils have bigger games on thier minds. They sat back allowed us the space we didn't get in the 1st & 2 periods.
Why can't we respond when things go against us?
On our day, against Berlin etc in the CHL we held our own against far superior opposition.
Recently at home we looked sublime against Guildford, yet too many times we're flat, lethargic and look like strangers on the ice against teams at our level, who are also short benched.
One thing I have noticed but can't explain is our speed of play and the speed of some of our forwards, is missing. We used to play at a high rate especially early on , as in the early CHL goals we got but now it’s more stroll about and pedestrian. Then there is the matter of how we used to break out of defence with our quick forwards, Juusola, Balmas, Ciampini, Watling , but they now seem under cruise control.
Can't remember many breakaway one on one's anymore.
Finally, we are not shooting first time but rather stopping the puck before taking a shot. By that time the goalie and defence have had time to block.
It's certainly puzzling but something has changed either in the dressing room, management, injuries or just confidence.
As pointed out above , Man City is a good parallel , can't buy a win after being supreme last season. Maybe it's just sport ?
Post game interview from Fox and he says we’re weak and cave in when we go behind. It certainly seems that way. Instead of a winning mentality we seem to have adopted a losing one.
I’m sure there was disappointment and maybe some of the players are questioning the coaching when times got tough in the CHL. I suppose they’ve sat down and had a cards on the table discussion, but if not it’s probably time to do it and get some team spirit and shared goals back.
Cardiff were short benched last night but they outworked us, so forget the excuses, get your heads right and get some pride back in the team please Steelers.
Sport is always cyclic in nature, one team does not dominate for long in UK ice hockey even if the club remains strong, we got fortunate last year in terms of injuries and maybe not so much this year, we also are weaker in face offs & backup netminders.
We are still in the hunt for two trophies and we had a superb CHL season, we have no right to just turn up and win games, they have to be earned. After last season the coach has banked a lot of trust and deserves the time to put things right again, our job is to continue to support the team and remain the biggest and best set of fans in the country.
It could be worse, we could be in the position Fife are, and for those with short memories we have been there before. As a personal opinion the fans of all the other EIHL clubs should make every effort to travel to games in Fife if they can and help keep that club going.
