Rumours - Season 24/25
Moderator: Mods
Finns have generally been very good for us.
The worry with Janatuinen would be the number of games he's missed the last couple of seasons.
He's obviously had a few injuries, but more often than not that's the reason we get players from top leagues like Liiga.
Undoubtedly he would be a gamble, but fair play to Fox, last season all his gambles paid off.

Both look very solid pieces, Janatuinen especially. Obviously amount of games a little bit of a concern but depends what the injuries were. But in terms of pedigree, Liiga is probably a top 4 league. You don't play multiple seasons if you are not up to scratch.
Hard to comment in one way given we don't have a definite view on who is leaving

I must be losing my touch, because ive had a good look at both of those players and based on the stats only, I can't find anything that would excite me about either of them...ginger wrote: ↑Fri Jun 28, 2024 9:25 pmBoth look very solid pieces, Janatuinen especially. I get where you're coming from Jay, neither of them really excite me.
On recent performances Miceli looks like a 15 to 20 goal man at a push, which is going to leave us a long way behind Belfast in terms of firepower next season (they're stacked throughout their roster).
His +/- are generally mid to higher level on the team, which is decent but not outstanding.
Janatuinen is tougher to call, because it would appear he's had a couple of injury hit seasons.
In 21/22 he had similar numbers to Juusola. If he's at a similar level to Juusola that would do for me. I guess a lot will depend on the impact the injuries have had on him, but he'd be a risk.
If we've signed both I'll certainly be more concerned than I was at the start of last season. Our main rivals for silverware look to have improved substantially, these two for me look decent, but no more than that.
I'll keep repeating myself though.....after last season we have to trust Fox's judgement, although there may become a time in the future when we stop trusting his judgement, but hopefully not.

A guy coming straight from Liiga doesn't excite you? Appreciate it looks like a couple of slightly injury hit years last 2, but year before he puts up 0.5 PPG in probably the 4th best league in the world. It's also a low scoring league so that's a solid return. Doubt Fox signs someone who's got a bad recurring injury (there's obviously a good amount of quality out there), so I'm guessing more unlucky than ongoing issues.Jayboy wrote: ↑Fri Jun 28, 2024 10:25 pmI must be losing my touch, because ive had a good look at both of those players and based on the stats only, I can't find anything that would excite me about either of them...ginger wrote: ↑Fri Jun 28, 2024 9:25 pmBoth look very solid pieces, Janatuinen especially. Miceli I would imagine being pencilled for 2nd line, but this is where it gets more tricky to decide if good/bad/like for like new players are. If he's replacing Allen or Nicholls for example, I'd be pretty happy - Miceli is a consistent scorer over a number of years in the EBEL/ICEHL. Current Italian international.
The EIHL is far below Liiga and probably overall slightly below ICEHL.

Ive been around hockey a good few decades now and while I do trust the couches judgement, I have also learned to judge my own gut, my understanding of stats and then my own eyes, i am often proved wrong happily, but at the same time I am very often spot on with my initial assessment..

Me too. I've not seen either play live or on tape, so it's all guesswork but when they're playing at a higher level than the EIHL, stats become less reliable - what role have they been playing, how many minutes, how high scoring is the league generally? Without that knowledge, I see it as potentially getting a player who's been playing at a higher level and should therefore be a bit ahead of where our league is on average. If that's not exciting, I don't know what isJayboy wrote: ↑Sat Jun 29, 2024 9:42 amIve been around hockey a good few decades now and while I do trust the couches judgement, I have also learned to judge my own gut, my understanding of stats and then my own eyes, i am often proved wrong happily, but at the same time I am very often spot on with my initial assessment..![]()
