Personally feel leadership was missing on ice.
The talk about Fox's high octane game-from early season onwards we barely saw it for more than 15-20 minutes per game!
The number one factor was goal scorers or lack of.
See yesterday's game. Look at the goal Cox scored, then the breakaway chance Latal had and missed.
Pre-season potential shortfall of goals/goal scorers was highlighted as an issue and it was proven correct in the end.

That is completely correct. Smith has written it in his own words in the program notes a month or so ago. Can’t remember the exact words he wrote but it was something like the Steelers are run first and foremost as a business to make money.Gibbo42 wrote: ↑Sun Apr 16, 2023 12:36 pmI’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. I’ve been slated consistently for saying it across social media platforms but more and more I’m proven right. Nothing will change until fans vote with their feet and wallets.
While 6,000+ keep turning up, buying 50/50 tickets and overpriced merchandise we can finish in last place as long as we keep making a profit. Nothing will change if the business model isn’t threatened.
I will be voting with my feet next season unless significant changes are made.

We will not win another championship whilst Tony is owner mark these words!

Of course it is a business and that is the management's focus. It is the same in any professional sport. However to maintain the flow of funds it needs success on the ice and this is where management needs to appoint someone to deliver that success and then stand back and let them get on with it. Where the coach cannot deliver, then management needs to step in and change things. That is where we are now. We need a new figure to re-set the Steelers and take us in a different direction with better recruitment, better tactics, alternate playing styles and bringing on British talent to replace those nearing the end of their time with us. The answer is not raising the import level and is not what most fans want to see. Particularly when we recruit middle of the road talent. Time or a change and an apical parting of the ways. It needs to happen soon to allow a new coach to start early on recruitment etc.

Thing is you have NOT been proven right at all have you, because there literally no way you can prove that Tony Smith cares more about profit that results can you.. the only thing with any certainty anyone can really prove is that he puts the continued security of Sheffield Steelers club as a business over failure and on ice success at any cost.Gibbo42 wrote: ↑Sun Apr 16, 2023 12:36 pmI’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. I know for a fact he would love to see silverware every year, but I also know that if he doesn't run the Steelers as a business we dont even have a club!
Whether at some point he sees the need to replace Fox like many of us do, only time will tell, but to decide winning at all costs is the way forward is the quickest way to lose the club.. Aka Darren Brown...

Smith runs Steelers as a very good business, which we as fans see benefits from, such as new jumbotrons and other no doubt many off ice improvements and great players welfare etc.Jayboy wrote: ↑Sun Apr 16, 2023 3:12 pmThing is you have NOT been proven right at all have you, because there literally no way you can prove that Tony Smith cares more about profit that results can you.. the only thing with any certainty anyone can really prove is that he puts the continued security of Sheffield Steelers club as a business over failure and on ice success at any cost.Gibbo42 wrote: ↑Sun Apr 16, 2023 12:36 pmI’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Thing is though Jay, he’s just a fan, he doesn’t appear IMO to know anything about ice hockey when it comes to the on ice activities. He needs help from a proper hockey person, who would see that that if he keeps Fox in charge we’re unlikely to see any of that shiny silverware. If he listens to the local estate agent then we’ll have even less chance of success.
I really don’t know how as owner Smith can keep a failing coach in charge I really don’t, especially if winning trophies is indeed one of his main priorities as owner. Next season will be exactly the same as this one, which is no where near good enough.
I called it in October, only just over a month into the season that we wouldn’t win anything, so if I and plenty of other people can see it, why can’t Tony?

“ To maintain the source of funds needs success on the ice “.
Well this season seems to suggest we don't . Crowds well up, results not so. I just wonder how many turn up for the show and a night out with a result a secondary option. These people won't be on this forum of course ( why would they ? ) but they may still keep the funds coming next year regardless of cups or no cups.
Perhaps the initiator of dance cams, boo/ cheer on the tron and a new shirt for every occasion from Trafalgar Day to Shrove Tuesday knows more than we think .(?) Just a thought forthe day.

Up until CoVid, we had season tickets for a good many years. Post CoVid we settled for taking the streams and quickly lost the habit of attending games.
This season we've watched only a handful of games but quite frankly have been bored stiff with the style of hockey we choose to play. Infact the last one we watched I think we turned it off about the end of the second.
I'm pleased Smith can run the club on a sound commercial footing but that and on ice success are not mutually exclusive. On top of that, the club, via the rink announcer and the social media team still makes a few regular gaffs each term.
It's pointless yearning for the good old days of in your face, aggressive hockey; they're for the oldies like me to look back on and recall with a smile but at some point the fans will start expecting trophies and it will be incumbent on the management to deliver. Might as well begin that process now!
