I've got to be honest and go against the flow a little here. I really dont see this has being a case of Steelers Management and owner putting entertainment above everything, that in my view is simple not true and more of a knee jerk reaction to losing games and seeing great advances in match night activities and adding 2+2 together and getting 5.
The Steelers owner Tony Smith will want more than anything to put a winning team together
(yes I know him enough to say this) but here's the rub, he hires a coach to do just that and he has to put his faith in Aaron Fox to do just that.
Sheffield Steelers is a sporting business like any other and as a sporting occasion aimed squarely at a competing market, the club just can not rely on the old guard hockey supporters who want to sit on their hands all night and watch hockey.. that WILL NOT bring in the fans and as some say put bums on seats. I have absolutely no beef at all with the club selling 50/50 all night long, giving away free burgers, dance cam and Baby shark when a baby is on the cam and I can't believe I am saying this, but even bloody Sweet Caroline..
Tony knows the only way to keep those bums on seats is to invest in a winning team and a winning mentality and if any of you think he is more interested in entertaining fans on a brand new jumbotron or firing rubber pucks at Steeler Dan you are wrong..
sure those things matter and are completely part of the package, the very same package at EVERY NHL game ive ever been to..
But Aaron Fox is charged with bringing us silverware and winning, if not we could literally build a Storm Esq team full of knuckle draggers and clowns for half the money we currently allocate Aaron in the team budget and we would win precisely nothing but get entertained..
Will Aaron Fox manage to use the budget to build a winning team is the question to me? I honestly dont think the integrity of the owners and management on whether there is a will for that to happen is questionable..
I would agree Jay that Tony and the management team want success. A lot of money is ploughed into the Steelers so I would be worried if Tony & team aren’t interested in winning trophies. You’re right it’s a sporting business and needs to be run as such.
However, from the outside looking in, it does appear that success is SECONDARY as long as there’s bums on seats, lots of 50/50 sales and free burgers. That’s purely my view. Thing is, bums on seats and all will fade away if the Steelers don’t compete and are successful. I’m not sure Aaron Fox is the man to lead us to the success we need.
My biggest beef though Jay, is that certain members of the club look at some of the fans with disdain and can’t stand it if anyone dares step out of line and justifiably criticise any of the club. The Thompson debacle showed the Steelers management team in their true colours.
It’s a few years since the Steelers were the benchmark for the league and I for one can’t stand it. One trophy in 5 years is it? Is that good enough? I don’t think so. If Tony & team are all about success, then further changes are needed to compete better for it. Both Cardiff and Belfast are ahead of us already this season IMO.
