Whilst I’d agree it’s very early days and there’s a LOT of hockey to play.

If there was a poll asking fans even at this stage of the season whether people thought this Steelers team are good enough to win the League, I’m afraid I would be voting no.

I don’t believe we have the necessary fire power to score enough goals, despite improving defensively compared to last season.

Early thoughts anyone?

I said before a puck was dropped I didn’t know where the goals would come from.

This team is playing as their CV’s suggest. Plenty of effort and grit, but the natural goal scoring ability isn’t there

So I looked at stats on EIHL website.

After 6 league games.

Top points scorers are the three on our top line headed by
Ciampini with 1+6
Scott Allen 5+1
Brett Neumann 2+4.
No one else on roster is at a point per game or above.
Allen is leading goal scorer, followed curiously by Pitule (3) then Brett Neumann (2). No-one else on roster has scored more than one throughout 6 league games.

Petgrave leads +/- with a whopping 9, and then by for the detractors Nevalainen with 8!
The next and first forward is Ciampini with 6.

Greenfield is still around 93%.

So.
Goal scoring is obviously missing, and overall secondary scoring beyond the current top line which I suspect Neumann may be taken off soon.

Do we need to change D units? Petgrave and Nevalainen smashing +/- stats but no other d men better than +2.

An interesting one. Graham has one assist only but is at 4 on +/- suggesting his 200 foot game is coming on nicely.

Goals for per game 3.5 (not bad but could be better) and goals against 1.83. Have to remember the occasional goal spurt in the odd game or two. Eg 7 when away to the Stars.
Unless the goals column and particularly secondary scoring increases then I think we may be close but not close enough.

But as always, still early and a long way to go.

Oh forgot to mention special teams.

Our pp is under 6%!!! PK is at 88 % . PP needs some serious action for sure.

There is also the non stat issues of showing composure, battling and bottle. We went a bit missing in the third period in all three aspects in last night's game.

Half the team played with Jagr, CLEARLY there's an advantage for us in that(!) IMO, with our current performance, no. We improve a bit in a few areas (PK) and have no injuries, maybe.

After what I watched last night, no, something is missing from the line up and that something is Vallerand, he's a massive miss for this team and imo we haven't replaced him, the netminder is (at the moment) the best I've seen in a few years, I thought Greenfield was outstanding last night and didn't deserve to be on the losing side.

Connolly needs to start stepping it up, I think the injury and his age may well have caught up with him, he looked so far behind the play last night at times (just my opinion)

Our best shot at a trophy this season is the Challenge Cup or the Playoffs (if we progress)

You have said what we're all thinking. Hope Vally comes back soon...

I think it might be interesting to put in an early poll here @Jayboy ?

Will be interesting to see how many of us even at this early stage were right or wrong at the end of the season.

Just as a bit of fun of course.

I split the question into two:

1. Do I think we will win the league? - No. I'll stick with my prediction at the start and say Belfast. I still think we're probably the best of the rest though.

2. Do I think we can win the league? - Yes. A few things would need to go our way though. Some of the forwards I described as risky signings would need to produce (Neumann, Raska, Connolly).

So far Neumann and Raska keep threatening to look good, but aren't consistent enough yet.

Connolly looks like what i thought he'd be, a player who plays with passion and cares, but his body is no longer capable. I'd put Graham in ahead of Connolly now.

We'd also need Belfast to under perform. I think if they lost Conway for a long period they'd be in trouble, because they've become heavily reliant on him.

Apart from Belfast, I don't think there is any other team obviously better than us. Cardiff are doing well in the league, but have been awful in the Challenge Cup. Guildford and Coventry are doing well, but I don't see either finishing above us.

Finish above Belfast and we win the league.

Regards
