We will be taking on:
Aalborg Pirates (Danish MetalLigaen)
HK Gomel (Belarusian Extraleague)
Olimpia Riga (Latvian Hockey Higher League)

Whilst I would like Steelers to win every competition they are entered in to, with a smaller roster and 3 games in 3 days with already a few injuries, I'm hoping this doesn't affect us domestically on their return.

AALBORG PIRATES:
The hosts Aalborg were formed in 1967 and play out of the 5000 capacity Gigantium Isarena in the northern Danish city of Aalborg. They currently sit top of the division.
They are coached by Canadian former New York Rangers, Montréal Canadiens, Florida Panthers & Phoenix Coyotes checking forward Garth Murray.
They were Danish MetalLigaen champions in 17/18 and have competed in the Continental Cup before in 07/08, making the final group. They’ve also played in the Champions League however didn’t make it out of their group.
The clubs have met 3 times previously, all in Pre Season matches with the Steelers winning all 3 by a combined 11 goals to 3.
More often than not, 5”9 George Sørensen is between the pipes, he’s operating at .907 through 18 games this year. He has pool A World Championships experience as well as Swedish Allsvenskan.
On D, Danish Lasse Bo Knudsen will look to agitate our forwards. He managed it well when we played them in pre season a few seasons back, only to be filled in by Colton Fretter.
Swede Victor Panelin Borg provides good size at 6”4” 220lbs. He enjoys the physical side of his position and has experience in the SHL, Norwegian Eliteserien and the old EBEL. He’s in his 6th straight year with the club.
Up front, the experienced Dane Patrik Bjorkstrand leads the team in scoring. Aaron Fox knows what he can bring, he signed him to Medveščak Zagreb of the KHL. He also has experience in the Swedish Allsvenskan, German DEL, the AHL, Finnish Liiga & the EBEL/ICEHL.
Veteran 34yo Danish international winger Julian Jakobsen provides good experience and scoring power. He’s a point a game this year and is gritty, regularly picking up PIMs. He has iced in the DEL, Allsvenskan & SHL.

HK GOMEL:
Belarusian Extraleague side HK Gomel were formed in 2000 and play in the 2760 capacity Gomel Ice Sports Palace in Southeastern Belarus, not far from the Russian & Ukrainian borders.
They are a 1 time Belarusian Extraleague champion back in 02/03. They have won the Belarusian Cup 5 times. In Europe, they’ve competed in the Continental Cup twice, most recently in 18/19 where they made the final group. The currently sit third in the league.
Their Head Coach is 47yo Sergei Stas, a former Belarusian international player who also iced extensively in the DEL and ECHL. He is a former KHL Assistant-Coach with Dinamo Minsk.
In goal, youthful 22yo Netminder Andrei Grischenko. He’s 6”2” and is achieving .918% so far this season.
On D, 32yo Russian Defenceman Mikhail Churlyayev stands 6”2” and is vastly experienced in the VHL, earning a few KHL call-ups along the way.
35yo veteran Belarusian Vadim Sushko has iced 726 times in the Belarusian Extraliga. He will be a strong leader to lean on with 3 previous Continental Cup campaigns for sides across Belarus.
Up front, their top scorer is 27yo speedy Russian winger Stanislav Kuchkin. He’s a reliable scorer in the Belarusian Extraleague but he’s also put up nice numbers in the VHL & Slovakian Extraliga.
32yo Belarusian winger Pavel Razvadovsky is no stranger to netting agains us, he did it twice for Yunost Minsk last time we played in this competition. He’s a former Belarusian international with vast experience in the Belarusian Extraleague as well as short stints in the KHL and Kazakhstan.

OLIMP RIGA:
Olimp Riga are a Latvian Hockey Higher League side based in the Latvian capital Riga. They were only recently formed in 2019 and play out of the small 1000 capacity Inbox.lv ledus halle in the western suburbs.
They are reigning & defending Latvian Hockey Higher League champions, the only silverware of their short 2 year history. They’re currently 4th in their league, 17 points off top.
Their Head Coach & GM is 38yo Latvian Maksims Širokovs. He’s well traveled as a player icing professionally in Latvia, America, Slovakia, Sweden, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Switzerland, Italy, Belarus & Romania. He coached the team to their first title in 20/21.
In recent games, 21yo Russian Netminder Andrey Bonch-Bruevich has manned the crease. He’s operating at .920% on the year and was developed all over Europe in Switzerland, Latvia, Sweden & Denmark.
On D, 38yo veteran Russian Defenceman Vitali Shulakov has 537 KHL games to his name scoring 127 points. He’s a solid 2-way D man with great positioning and smarts.
Another hugely experienced Defenceman on the roster comes in the form of 40yo Latvian Georgijs Pujacs. He captains the club, and is a former Latvian international. He’s iced 434 times in the KHL as well as in Belarus, Germany & Sweden. He also has experience already in the Continental Cup as well as the prestigious Spengler Cup.
Up front, 37yo Mikelis Redlihs is hugely experienced at the KHL level. He’s played 667 times in the division, mainly with Dinamo Riga. He’s played in the Continental Cup as well as the Spengler Cup, Allsvenskan, Belarusian Extraleague & internationally for Latvia.
An EIHL link comes from yet another veteran, 37yo Edijs Brahmanis. He was part of a Basingstoke Bison roster in 05/06 that included the likes of Jason Hewitt & Doug Shephard. He’s played most his hockey in Latvia, Belarus & Kazakhstan.
Finally, 27yo Martin Lavrovs should know what to expect from an EIHL opponent. He was part of the HK Kurbads side we beat 4-2 in Denmark to secure qualification to the 17/18 Continental Cup Final.
