Age is just a number, it’s their on-ice quality that counts.
Duba & Phillips were amongst the fittest in the league while also being amongst the oldest.
At the other end we’ve had players such as 1st season DeLuca & the Ruperts who were younger and less fit.
It’s all about mentality, the skill set of the player rarely diminishes, it’s about how well they’ve looked after themselves in their career.
So it tends to be players dropping down to the EIHL are in better shape.

I feel the same way, the only new signing who excites me is ASD (if he classes as new).smbmetal wrote: ↑Wed Jul 28, 2021 10:27 amAt the moment, I can't really say I'm really excited by any of our new signings and do have a concern at the current average age of our squad.
While there is no substitute for experience a few players are now coming to the end of their careers and I hope that doesn't mean their output will be reduced.
It will be interesting to see what the remaining few will be.
I would be happy with Barry Brust if he is indeed our new goalie.
I guess there is more uncertainty this season than any other with the likely quality of the older players, because it's difficult to benchmark them last season so we don't really know how much they've declined (if at all).
Younger players like Eberle should be fine, but much of our squad is at the older end of the age scale.
I guess time will tell when we finally get to see them in action again.

Also this year there’s the alleged “agreed salary cap” which may impact the quality of addition. Cardiff’s imports for example look far cheaper than normal.
Just 5 Brits means you can’t play 4 lines either.

I think something like this maybe?
Connolly - Hodgman - Vally
Dowd - Oleksuk - Eberle
Deluca - Armstrong - Latal
Mosey - (rotate) - Philips
IMPORT - IMPORT
ASD - Phillips
IMPORT -Jones
IMPORT
Churchfield

In one of his interviews Fox did mention the chemistry Vally/Conolly/DeLuca have, so I could see him starting with that as a line.
Whether it stays together is another issue, but I guess that will depend on the chemistry other lines show.

I don't think age is as big a factor for goalies.Ron 25 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 28, 2021 1:35 pmBarry Brust is almost 38 - is there no concern about his fading abilities - and the subsequent rise in the team's average age? After all, age is as big a concern for a nettie as for anyone else on the ice.smbmetal wrote: ↑Wed Jul 28, 2021 10:27 amAt the moment, I can't really say I'm really excited by any of our new signings and do have a concern at the current average age of our squad.

Plus he's played consistently at a very high level so should have no issues playing in our beer league
