The importance of our Netminder

I don't think we can underestimate the importance of this seasons 1st choice goalie, my personal view is that is really could be the make or break of our upcoming season even at this early stage.
Some of you may not agree, however I don't feel Aaron Fox as yet signed us a stud goalie while he as been our coach and got very lucky with Rok.. I am. Hoping he has placed a higher importance on the incoming keeper, as he has already admitted he had The Rok down for a return..
A bang average keeper can lose you the league and many games, a stud keeper can win you the league and many games you had not right to win..

The netminder is the most important position we need to get that right.

We do need to bring in quality, but any netminder will only be as good as the 5 man defensive unit in front of him.

If that’s poor and giving up lots of chances his numbers will be poor, if it’s strong he’ll have an easier time if it.

Good point. We always think the goalie is most important position and it may be in our league for a variety of reasons.
I find it interesting how netties don't seem to draft highly very often in THE NHL. Is it because its more of a crapshoot working out whether a 17-18 year old will turn into a stud NHL goalie or whether they place more emphasis on the scoring, flare forward players ?

It's always a fine balance in defence when you build fast paced teams that like to attack fast from the back, me I would prefer at least 2 quality stay at home defenders to pair with the first two offencive defender pairings. It's so easy to throw the balance of the defence out by being to attack minded in my opinion. To. Many times last year both goalies were hung out to dry with both defenders stuck playing catch up in the opposition end...

I think the stud goalie is the one that pulls off astonishing saves and that includes being up to the job when the defence has let you down. A rare person and perhaps why we can’t afford to attract them here for long, we can’t compete on wages.

100% Correct, how many games have we won in the past because of our netminder.? Hundreds.

Start from the back and build forwards.

My concern is todays article about Todd returning. The guy was the best D Man last year but if he returns we are woefully light at the back end and we’ll get hammered around our crease and have an overworked netminder and we’ve all seen how that goes down…..

The coach’s comments do worry me about having a big presence at the back. If those comments ring true, then we’ll have pretty stiff necks this time next year.

Maybe not a popular view, but some of the statements our coach makes doesnt half wind me up, and I think it stems from the type of hockey we as Sheffield Steelers Fans traditionally enjoy watching... stating we cant afford the type of player we need or the fans want to see is hard to swallow when other team manage to find them. I really do like most of what he says and puts on the ice but sometimes those type of comments really dont sit well with me..

Most important position on the team for me.

I would suggest the difference between a 91% netminder and 93% netminder is around 35 goals a season......that's a lot of L's turned into W's.
