Steelers 21/22 Signing Discussion

If our top 3 centres were Connolly, Hodgman and Armstrong I'd be worried, because all 3 are on the downward curve, but Fox did say he's signed another centre.

If the new guy is a top 6 centre to go with Hodgman that puts a completely different look on things.

Throw a new top end centre into that group and put Armstrong or Connolly as our 3rd line centre and we'd be looking much stronger.

I'm obviously delighted by Eberle, the other two have been excellent in the past, but I have concerns about their age and whether the missed season will cause a more dramatic decline.....I guess it's a wait and see.

We have been linked with 32 year old Canadian centre Travis Oleksuk.

Oleksuk has 274 games of AHL experience and a further 283 games in the EBEL/ICEHL most recently with the Graz 99ers in 20/21.

37 year old former NHL & KHL netminder Barry Brust has also been linked with a move to South Yorkshire.

He played 11 NHL games and has gone on to ice 185 times in the KHL including with Fox.

He’s also iced 245 AHL games as well as time in the Swiss National League, German DEL & Slovakian Extraliga.

Brust didn’t play in 19/20.

Brust looks like he has good experience if he is still physically capable he could be a good signing, nothing about Travis Oleksuk particularly stands out to say he would be any better than what we already have signed for the centre spots

Steelers confirm English defenceman Sam Jones is to return.

The 6”2” 23 year old was mostly developed in the Canadian junior system.

He is a dynamic, 200ft player who skated well for the league.

He joined the EIHL with the Fife Flyers in 2019/20 before icing the Elite Series with us.

He’s played 46 EIHL games in total.

One the other end of the experience scale, David Phillips is to ice 21/22 in orange.

Phillips works hard and plays a tough style on D.

The 6”3” 33yr old is a product of the Hull system and has gone on to play 723 times in EIHL competitions for the Hull Stingrays, Belfast Giants, Coventry Blaze, Manchester Storm & Sheffield Steelers.

He’s also played 68 AHL games for the Rockford IceHogs, Chicago Wolves & Lake Eerie Monsters.

In the ECHL for the Toledo Walleye & Gwinnett Gladiators.

In the Danish Metal Ligaen with SønderjyskE.

In the Erste Liga for Hungarian side Dunaújvárosi Acélbikák.

He’s also played Continental Cup & Champions League at club level.

Internationally he’s played 89 times for GB.
