He certainly deserves a crack at itginger wrote: ↑Mon May 06, 2024 6:34 pmIf Whistle isn't their starter after this year I'll be shocked. Had a great year.wakefieldsteelersfan wrote: ↑Mon May 06, 2024 6:08 pmIt'll be goaltending that makes or breaks their season IMO.
Be interesting to see who they replace Besko with. They've tried twice to replace him with Shane Owen and Peyton Jones, neither of which was particularly successful.
I'm not so sure they win the last grand slam if they didn't bring him back mid-season.
No surprises here:

Conway and Piccinich are great signings for Belfast, regardless of any social media output.
Both have continued to put up good numbers whilst abroad, including excellent +/-. I see their top line being the best in the league, but no doubt they will have had to pay big money for both, which could impact on their squad depth.....we shall see.
In Conway they also arguably have the best faceoff player in the league, which gives them a big advantage on special teams.
Conway is above our level, which probably says something about him as a person. Whilst Kirk could come back to Sheffield and be the star player in the league, he chooses to challenge himself and play at the highest level possible. No doubt Conway could play at a higher level and earn more money, but he clearly prefers to be the big fish in a small pond.

Kirk is a lot younger than Conway is. Sure when Kirk gets to an age where money might not be as big a factor, he may also decide to play at a lower level but be a star player at that level.Doom wrote: ↑Wed May 08, 2024 9:37 amConway and Piccinich are great signings for Belfast, regardless of any social media output.

I'd be delighted if we had signed Conway, dodgy social media or not. Mosienko was one of my favourite EIHL players and he was done for match fixing, worked out fine for us as we were able to get him at a lower salary.

Honestly think Conway's ego/public ref criticism possibly put teams in DEL etc off him.
Giants will have a great 1st line, but if we retain Balmas, Ciampini, Watling, I don't see a massive difference in overall quality. Question is are they going to go as they did previously, with essentially 5/6 guys scoring 80% of points, or follow what we did where every line can contribute.
It could come down to Goaltending, in which cases I think we would have the edge assuming Greenfield returns and Whistle is Giants starter

Kirk probably still has aspirations of playing NHL, whereas I'd agree at a much older age that won't be the case with Conway.
I just thought with him putting up good numbers in Slovakia ( he was 2nd on his team from fewer games than the top guy), he would have received a good offer from another mainland Europe team and want to keep testing himself. After what he said about the refs in our league, I assumed he'd no intention of returning.
Maybe the Giants have thrown so much money his way he couldn't resist or he likes playing in a league where he's top dog....who knows?
At the end of the day it's all speculation and nothing to do with me, he could sign for Leeds Knights if he wanted, but I am a little surprised to see him back after doing well in Slovakia.
Giants have certainly thrown down the gauntlet.....I hope Tony has negotiated plenty of places with the University.

I'd be in complete agreement if we signed Conway I'd be over the moon. Just thinking back to Mosienko wasn't it actually him that told on other players match fixing rather than him match fixing itself?smbmetal wrote: ↑Wed May 08, 2024 10:21 amKirk is a lot younger than Conway is.
