That was far more difficult than I first thought.
Out of all the players that I thought I would like to retain for my first six I have gone with the players that I think would be difficult to replace:
Evan Mosey, Martin Latal, Brendan Connoly, Robert Dowd, Marc-Olivier Vallerand, and Sam Jones.
Daine Todd would have been in there but it seems unlikely that he will stay here.
If I was really pushed I would have him replace Brendan Connoly as we don't know what he will do for next year.

So far the big surprise for me is Jonathan Phillips although it's clear that he squeaks into in the next six, a few seasons ago he would have been one of the first guys on my list...

Thing is Jay we don't see him as much on the top lines these days, so is unlikely to get into most people's top 6 players. For me, he is still one the best penalty killers in the league and is still as fit as anyone else despite his age.
I would always find room for him in my squad as long as he doesn't hang them up. Dowd is the natural captain successor for me once Jono does decide to hang them up.
Once he does hang them up, I look forward to seeing his retired shirt on the concourse along with a special event for it.

I found this incredibly difficult and had to whittle it down to 6 from 9.
.
I went for
Eberle
Dowd
Vallerand
ASD
Jones
Latal
The three who just missed out were
Mosey
D Phillips
Whistle
I can't say I'd be too bothered about having any of the others back next season.
I think time is finally catching up on J Phillips, but the guy deserves our utmost respect.
I think we retired some shirts too cheaply, but in his case it would be fully deserved.

So an update on the Poll stats: makes for an interesting read. Stats can be made out to look anyway you please but this poll gives us a look at what the fans see and think week in week out, whatever way you dress it up thats a lot of scouting done on the players performance on the ice from those that pay to watch it.
Call it a customer survey..
Top 6 players stad as:
Marc-O Vallerand 15%
Martin Latal 14%
Robert Dowd 13%
Evan Mosey 11%
Sam Jones 9%
Tanner Eberle 8%
All others players combined total of 30% of the vote..
The Defenders managed 23% of the total vote with Sam Smith the only defender getting in the top 6 with 9%
Giving the remaining defenders 14% between them
10% of that 14% coming from Daine Todd and Adrian Saxrud Danielsen
I think we can see the pattern..

I think that’s also reflective of sports fan behaviour generally. When a goal is conceded it’s always the netminder/D who’ll get the blame first regardless of how poor the defensive application of the forwards is.Jayboy wrote:So an update on the Poll stats: makes for an interesting read. Forwards are usually more popular too, it’s very rare you’ll see a D man win a clubs POTY or league MVP, again regardless of their defensive nouse.
It’s a pretty interesting topic actually.

Absolutely agree. A lot of goals conceded have been as a result of forwards poor d zone play/coverage but they seem to not be accountable to lots of fans.SteelerBlade wrote: ↑Fri Mar 25, 2022 11:30 amI think that’s also reflective of sports fan behaviour generally. Oh I hold them accountable and so do the fans, but I agree it's not as obvious in the vote.paul johnston wrote: ↑Fri Mar 25, 2022 11:34 amAbsolutely agree. The next 8 forwards came in with 10%
Brandon Whistle 6%
Jono Phillips 2%
Vojtech Polak 1%
John Armstrong 1%
Justin Hodgman 0%
Matias Sointu 0%
Tommaso Traversa 0%
Cole Shudra 0%
With only Brandon Whistle and Jono actually standing out as players willing to defend on any given night...

Out of our current D core I'd like to see Schulze, Jones and Todd return.
Davey looks shot to pieces and wouldn't at all be surprised if he calls it a day or drops down a level in the close season.
Ellerby has flattered to deceive all year and ASD is ok but easily replaced and upgraded on.
