Good game overall. Dominant in the 1st but didn't get the reward. Bit of a drop off in the second, but think it was more about adjustments made by Guildford in their forecheck. Gifted them the goal, but was probably even in chances after. 3rd period was back to dominating and got rewarded.
Gentile is very good. That line has already clicked and it looked dangerous on a number of shifts. Harper is what we missed last year - physical, strong on the boards but skilled and will score/create. Essentially he fills the Scott Allen shaped hole.
Pu. Yeah, he's just legit. So responsible, and then great skating and hockey IQ. He made a great play just before his goal and his forechecking showed why he played very high level bottom 6 roles.
Dougherty was my pick of the D - he's probably going to be most weeks, as you only noticed him if you actually focus on him. And then it gets better because of clever plays he makes that allows for zone exits every shift.
Guildford look ok, but they are going to rely on Coughler, Ully and Gosselin a lot. Can't really judge their new goalie considering that was his first game. He looked solid enough though.
More importantly, enjoyed being back in the arena!

A fun night, that showed we have a lot of potential in our team. Nice to see the baby faced assassin scoring a couple tonight, he could be a very important part of the team for us this season.

So Seitz was the healthy scratch. A bit of a surprise really, because I was expecting one of the defence. I think Seitz will play tonight, because he has a decent record against Cardiff.
Looking at the game stats it would appear we just edged the faceoffs, with Harper being the best in the dot.
Guildford out shot us 36 to 27, although tracking had us at 64% to win the game, because we had the better chances.
Interestingly, the expected goals had the second period as our best, although most people would suggest Guildford had the better of that period.
Juusola was top of +/- with +3.
Bottom were Shudra, Dougherty and Neilson, all with -1.
Early season and it could have been worse.....we could have crashed at home to Dundee or Cardiff.

The Seitz sitting out is a puzzler when we didn't then go on to throw Tansey into a forward role for a full four forward lines. Shows the issues we have with Kelly as our Brit/6th D. The faith in him to be a regular minute taker isn't there yet.Doom wrote: ↑Sun Sep 14, 2025 9:00 amSo Seitz was the healthy scratch. So if they take another forward out of the line up tonight, how will that effect the lines and getting some chemistry going forward.
Im also puzzled about the 2 year contract given to Jasper even before he'd hit the ice with us. I cant recollect that happening at all in recent years. He reminds me in his skating and appearance and tenacity of Tim Cranston, without the finishing/goals (so far anyway)

We said after his second goal that he didn’t want it to go to overtime as it would probably be past his bedtime. He does look a cracking player though.Jayboy wrote: ↑Sun Sep 14, 2025 8:42 amOur friend behind us was having Libby on that he is 12!! lol and said she had more hair on her face than he does!!Keith Sheppard wrote: ↑Sat Sep 13, 2025 11:43 pmA fun night, that showed we have a lot of potential in our team. According to the EIHL website Kelly had less than 5 minutes on ice.
This is a concern for me, because if Fox doesn't trust him we'll need to ice 6 import d, which is going to blow the balance of the forward lines.
Hopefully he's just easing him in and will start to increase his ice time game by game.
Also worth pointing out that according to the website, Seitz was on the ice for 3 minutes....so the quality of the information is questionable.

I was really pleased with the intensity during the first and was amazed we didn't score earlier. Some of the shots seemed a bit wild but at least they were happening. I thought we sometimes passed too many times and then lost the puck last season, probably looking for the ideal opportunity. Second was a bit flatter, but came back in the third to seal a good win. As it stands I am excited for the season.
